2 Things

1. V.B.S. starts on Tuesday... please pray all goes well. That kids have fun, learn about Jesus and God is glorified!

2. There are some pretty weird people out there.

You may be saying, "DUH Kara!" to yourself right now, but there IS more to this story. Yes, weird is relative. It all depends on how YOU see normal...blah, blah, blah! That's not what I'm debating and this paragraph isn't helping me get to my point so I'm going to start a different one.

This past week I was going to town with a co-worker to shop for VBS. We were talking and her two (out of 4) girls were sitting in the back of the van with their ears PLASTERED to the speakers. I thought it was kinda weird, but I just thought, "Maybe they don't get out much." Well... the radio was tuned to the Christian station... Air1... maybe you've heard it yourself? It's KLove's sister station that is suppose to play more teenage/rock/punk stuff. Luke and I listen to it now and then... but that's besides the point.

My co-worker was like, "Oh, their Dad doesn't like the beat to these songs, so they aren't allowed to listen to the radio. I let them soak up as much as possible when ever we're on a town trip with out him. And because he doesn't like the beat to most tunes, I find myself not listening to any music in the house either. So the girls and I both listen music when ever he's not around."

WHAT! This is Christian music folks. Not 50 Cent and not Aerosmith!! Nor is it Lead Zeplan or Merlin Manson (sp?). Christian music! Yeah, maybe Christan rock lacks a little... shall we say flavor??... but... ummm... the words and meaning are about God and glorifying Him!

So I'm from the school of, "I'd rather them be listening to this kind of music than that other stuff the secular stations are playing." When I was a teenager, I remember trying to defend the "secular" music I listened to by saying, "I only like the beat. I don't listen to the words." And such.

But this family is backwards! Their Father doesn't want them listening to MUSIC... because he thinks the beats in the music are "meant to pull out sinful emotions." That's a direct quote folks!

Don't you think that's weird? I will admit that it's weird to me because I don't understand it! He has his reasons, and it's his family... therefore, it's his right. But I STILL find it rather WEIRD!

You could ask Heather and Marty Pierce if they have insight into your inquiries. Don't you remember when we could only listen to Acapella in their van? Those second and fourth beats can lead a soul to a dark, dark place!

Good grief. I'm sorry, dude--that's just ignorant. If he's that control freaky about music, I have to wonder what else is going on there.

I can see being worried about the words, but the beat? Seriously? The beat? Yes, beware the dangers of 4/4 time! Get a grip, dude. Parents that strict (without good logic to back it up) are the kinds of parents whose daughters end up pregnant five minutes after they leave for college. (If they're allowed to go to college, that is.)

I realize that the post was just about music, but I've been around a while and seen a few things, and that story sets off huge alarms for me.

Yeah, Jen... I remember the pierce van. And I remember the Vancouver church when they played instrumental music on their hod feature for the phone instead of the Christian station. Ahhh, the good old days!

And Gina... he DOES have issues! He grew up at the facility that I work at because his family was too hopped up on drugs to take care of him. He became a control freak because he never had any control over his living situations or what his family did to him. His wife helps balance him out pretty well. The music thing though... she decided it wasn't a blattle she wanted to fight. Very perceptive, aren't we? I'm still so proud to know you!

Hey.. hug your face for me... I miss it! BOTH of you! HUG your face right this instant! I love you... my dear, sweet commenting friends!

Well, after Gina's comment, I hesitate to tell you that my dad only grew out of his belief, based in 1950's propaganda (yeah, he's a little older), that Rock is inherently evil, when we got old enough to make a positive case for it ourselves.
